Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease that usually affects the lungs.

It is caused by the bacteria Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The bacteria mainly attacks the lungs but can affect other areas of the body. TB is spread through the air when people with lung TB cough, sneeze or spit. It can be fatal, but it is preventable and treatable in many cases.

  • A persistent cough that lasts for three or more weeks
  • Coughing up blood or mucus
  • Chest pain, or pain with breathing or coughing
  • Weight loss
  • Fatigue
  • Fever
  • Night sweats
  • Chills
  • Loss of appetite

Types of TB:

Latent TB

TB bacteria can live in the body without making you sick. This is called latent TB infection. In most people who breathe in TB bacteria and become infected, the body can fight the bacteria to stop them from growing. People with latent TB infection have no symptoms. Latent TB can turn into active TB, so treatment is important

Active TB

In active TB (also known as TB disease), the bacteria multiply in the body, causing noticeable symptoms. Active TB makes you sick and, in most cases, can spread to others. It can occur weeks or years after infection with the TB bacteria.

Different stages of TB:

Causes of TB

TB is a bacterial infection. The bacteria spread through the air from one person to another. The bacteria enter the air when a person with active TB in the throat or lungs talks, laughs, sneezes, or coughs.

You can’t get TB by:

• Shaking someone’s hand
• Sharing food or drink
• Sharing toothbrushes
• Touching something an infected person has touched

Frequently Asked Questions

If you are still unsure about this test, here are some questions that we usually get asked.

Still need answers?

How soon do symptoms appear?

Symptoms may occur as early as several weeks after infection, or it could take many years before a person develops TB disease. The period for the greatest risk of developing TB disease is within the first two years after infection.

When and for how long is a person able to spread TB?

A person with TB disease may be able to spread the TB germs until they have been on medicine for several weeks. However, a person with latent TB infection, but not disease, cannot spread the infection to others since there are no TB germs in the sputum (phlegm).

How can I avoid getting TB?

Exercising cough etiquette when coughing (cough in the inner part of the elbow or into a tissue/clothing). Getting a diagnosis and starting treatment early will prevent the spread of TB to others. In addition, it is recommended to wear a mask that covers the nose and mouth; and to meet outdoors or in well-ventilated areas.
