Men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer

#2

The 2nd most common cancer in men worldwide is prostate cancer.

Its most important function is the production of a fluid that, together with sperm cells from the testicles and fluids from other glands, makes up semen.

The prostate is located just below the bladder and in front of the rectum. It is about the size of a walnut and surrounds the urethra. As a man ages, the prostate tends to increase in size.

  • Difficulty starting urination.
  • Weak or interrupted flow of urine.
  • Frequent urination, especially at night.
  • Difficulty emptying the bladder completely.
  • Pain or burning during urination.
  • Blood in the urine or semen.
  • Pain in the back, hips, or pelvis that doesn’t go away.
  • Painful ejaculation.
  • Erectile dysfunction

What causes prostate cancer?

No one knows why or how prostate cancer starts. Studies show that 1 in 3 men over the age of 50 has some cancer cells in the prostate.  Even though there is no known reason for prostate cancer, there are many risks associated with the disease

Factors that increase your risk of prostate cancer include:

Older age

Your risk of prostate cancer increases as you age.

Obesity

People who are obese may have a higher risk of prostate cancer compared with people considered to have a healthy weight.

Race

For reasons not yet determined, Black people have a greater risk of prostate cancer than people of other races. In Black people, prostate cancer is also more likely to be aggressive or advanced.

Family history

If a relative, such as a parent, sibling or child, has been diagnosed with prostate cancer, your risk may be increased.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you are still unsure about this test, here are some questions that we usually get asked.

Still need answers?

What is a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test?

The PSA test is a blood test that measures the amount of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in your blood. PSA is a protein produced by normal cells in the prostate and also by prostate cancer cells. It’s normal to have a small amount of PSA in your blood, and the amount rises slightly as you get older and your prostate gets bigger.

A PSA test is performed the same way as other routine blood tests. A small blood sample is drawn and brought to a laboratory where trained specialists measure the amount of PSA in your blood.

What is a prostate-specific antigen (PSA)?

Prostate-specific antigen, or PSA, is a protein produced by the prostate gland. When there’s a problem with the prostate gland, it releases more PSA. High levels of PSA can be a sign of prostate cancer.

Is prostate cancer curable?

As with all cancers, a “cure” for prostate cancer refers to a patient’s likelihood of remaining disease-free for a specific time. In general, the earlier the cancer is caught, the more likely it is for the patient to remain disease-free.
