Nigerians carry the gene that causes sickle cell anaemia.

100,000

Babies in Nigeria die from sickle cell disease yearly.

Haemoglobin (Hb) is an important molecule in red blood cells, which functions to aid the delivery of oxygen from the lungs to other parts of the body. In adults, two molecules of normal Haemoglobin A are present (AA).

In the first two years of life, Haemoglobin F may also be present in significant amounts. Some abnormal forms of haemoglobin are often inherited and may cause a blood disorder. The abnormality may affect the structure of the haemoglobin, its behaviour, its production rate, and/or its stability. The common abnormalities of haemoglobin include haemoglobinopathies (such as sickle cell disease when at least one abnormal haemoglobin S is present – AS, SC, SS) and thalassemias (such as alpha thalassemias with reduced amounts of normal haemoglobin).

Frequently Asked Questions

If you are still unsure about this test, here are some questions that we usually get asked.

Still need answers?

What’s the relationship between sickle cell and genes?

Sickle cell disease is a genetic disorder. The basis of the disease is a change (mutation) in the gene that determines what haemoglobin type is formed. Our genes are inherited from our parents.

What causes sickle cell anaemia?

Sickle cell anaemia occurs when an individual inherits two abnormal haemoglobin S (one from each parent).

What is the difference between blood group and genotype?

The main difference between haemoglobin electrophoresis and blood group is that haemoglobin electrophoresis is determined by the type of haemoglobin present inside the red cells while blood group is determined by proteins (antigens) which are present on the surface of red blood cells as well as the presence or absence of specific antibodies in the blood.
