Heart disease
Research shows that O blood types have a lower risk of coronary heart disease. Some think it might be because other types are more likely to have higher cholesterol and higher amounts of a protein linked to clotting.
Pancreatic Cancer
Your risk is higher if you’re type A, AB, or B. Molecules in type A and B red blood cells help certain bacteria called H. pylori to grow in your gut. It can make you more likely to get pancreatic cancer.
Stress
Stress boosts your body’s cortisol level, the stress hormone. People with type A blood tend to have more cortisol, anyway. So you may have a harder time dealing with stressful situations.
Malaria
Type O blood may help ward off this disease. The parasite that causes it has a harder time attaching itself to type O blood cells.
Ulcers
Peptic ulcers seem to happen more often with blood type O.
Blood clots
Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is when your blood clots in a deep vein, like the ones in your legs. These clots sometimes move to your lungs. Research shows that people with type A, B, or AB blood are at a higher risk of VTE.
Life span
Chances are higher that you’ll live longer if you have type O blood. This is because people with O blood type are at a lower risk of getting cardiovascular disease.
Diabetes
Type 2 diabetes seems to happen more often in people with blood types A and B.
Stroke
Your risk for a stroke goes up if you have blood type AB. It may be because it’s more likely to clot than other types.
The ABO system has four main blood groups
Blood group A
People with this blood group have an A protein (antigen) on the surface of their red cells. They also naturally have antibodies that attack the B protein in their blood.
Blood group B
People with this blood group have a B protein (antigen) on the surface of their red cells. They also naturally have antibodies that attack the A protein in their blood.
Blood group O
People with this blood group have neither the A nor B protein (antigen) on the surface of their red cells. They also naturally have antibodies that attack the A and B proteins in their blood.
Blood group AB
People with this blood group have both the A and B proteins (antigen) on the surface of their red cells. They do not have antibodies against either the A or B protein.

What is the difference between antibodies and antigens?
Antibodies are proteins found in plasma. They’re part of your body’s natural defences. They can recognise as foreign any substances that are not normally a part of our bodies, such as germs, and trigger a set of actions to remove or destroy the foreign substance. Antigens are protein molecules which can trigger the formation of antibodies.
What is the difference between blood group and genotype?
The main difference between haemoglobin electrophoresis and blood group is that haemoglobin electrophoresis is determined by the type of haemoglobin present inside the red cells while blood group is determined by proteins (antigens) which are present on the surface of red blood cells as well as the presence or absence of specific antibodies in the blood.
What is a universal blood donor?
Universal donors are those with an O-negative blood type. This is because they do not have any naturally occurring antibodies that may attack the A, B or D proteins (antigens)
