Iodine deficiency
Iodine is used by the thyroid hormone to produce thyroid hormones. A deficiency of iodine in the diet may affect the ability of the thyroid gland to make thyroid hormones.

Autoimmune disease
Diseases in which an individual’s immune system attacks their own cells. When the cells attacked are those of the thyroid gland, it may result in abnormal functioning of the thyroid gland.
