Colorectal cancer is the fourth most common cause of cancer-related deaths.

The colon (large intestine)  and the rectum, as part of the digestive system, function to absorb water and nutrients from our food.

The colon (large intestine)  and the rectum, as part of the digestive system, function to absorb water and nutrients from our food. They also help to store stools and remove waste. Cancer of the colorectal area occurs when cells of the colon or rectum grow out of control. Screening tests help identify abnormal growths in the colon or rectum, which may increase the risk of colorectal cancer and help identify the disease at a stage when treatment is most effective.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you are still unsure about this test, here are some questions that we usually get asked.

Still need answers?

How does colon cancer develop?

Colon cancer often begins as small growth called polyps. These polyps, which are not cancerous, usually grow slowly. Some of them may eventually become cancerous over time.

What is a polyp?

Polyps are mushroom-like growths that form when cells lining the colon grow, divide and reproduce in an unhealthy, disorderly way. Polyps can become cancerous over time, invading the colon wall and surrounding blood vessels, and spreading to other parts of the body.

Why are colonoscopies important?

A positive faecal occult blood test is not diagnostic of colorectal cancer. It is an indication of a colonoscopy. Colonoscopy is a medical procedure during which a doctor uses a scope to look inside the colon and the rectum. During this procedure, a piece of any abnormal tissue that is seen can be taken and sent for histology, where a diagnosis of cancer may be confirmed or refuted.
