STATISTICS

Deaths in Nigeria are directly due to non-communicable diseases (heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes, and chronic lung disease).

#1

Hypertension is the most common cause of heart failure in Nigeria.

#1

Diabetes kills more people in Nigeria than COVID-19, TB, HIV/AIDS, and cancer combined.

Heart attack (coronary artery disease) is a serious and life-threatening condition that results from changes in the heart or blood vessels that occur over a long period of time.

It is a common cause of sudden death. The risk for heart attack may be increased by smoking, abnormal cholesterol levels in your system, an unhealthy diet, a sedentary lifestyle and obesity.

Heart attack may result in a variety of different symptoms.

  • Lightheadedness
  • Fluttering heart or racing heartbeat
  • Slow pulse
  • fainting spells
  • dizziness
  • chest pain or discomfort
  • a feeling of pressure or squeezing in the chest
  • shortness of breath
  • nausea
  • feelings of indigestion or gas

  • Age: Growing older increases your risk of damaged and narrowed arteries and a weakened or thickened heart muscle.
  • Sex: Men are generally at greater risk of heart disease. The risk for women increases after menopause.
  • Family history: A family history of heart disease increases your risk of coronary artery disease.
  • Smoking: Heart attacks are more common in smokers than in nonsmokers.
  • Poor diet: A diet that’s high in fat, salt, sugar and cholesterol can contribute to the development of heart disease.
  • High blood pressure: Uncontrolled high blood pressure can result in hardening and thickening of your arteries, narrowing the vessels through which blood flows.
  • High blood cholesterol levels: High levels of cholesterol in your blood can increase the risk of having a buildup of fats, cholesterol and other substances in and on your artery walls.
  • Diabetes: Diabetes increases your risk of heart disease.
  • Obesity: Excess weight typically worsens other heart disease risk factors.
  • Physical inactivity: Lack of exercise also is associated with many forms of heart disease and some of its other risk factors as well.
  • Stress: Unrelieved stress may damage your arteries and worsen other risk factors for heart disease.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you are still unsure about this test, here are some questions that we usually get asked.

Still need answers?

How do I know my risk of having a heart attack?

There are several factors that are combined to determine your risk of a heart attack. These include your sex, age, blood pressure or use of antihypertensive medication and the total cholesterol, HDL-C,  LDL-C and high sensitivity C reactive protein. There are mathematical models that can be used to determine your 10-year risk of having these parameters.

How can I prevent myself from having a heart attack?

Making certain lifestyle changes has been known to reduce the risk of heart attacks. These changes include:

  • Quitting smoking
  • Keeping track of other health conditions such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes.
  • Exercising regularly
  • Eating a healthy diet
  • Maintaining a healthy weight
  • Reducing or managing stress
  • Practicing good hygiene
