People in the world have been infected with hepatitis B

Hepatitis is the term used to describe a disease characterised by inflammation of the liver.

Hepatitis may be caused by several things, including viruses, chemicals, drugs, and alcohol. Viruses are the most common cause of hepatitis. Viruses which may cause hepatitis include Hepatitis A virus, Hepatitis B virus, Hepatitis C virus, Hepatitis D virus and Hepatitis E virus. While most adults are able to clear the virus after an infection, some are unable to and may progress to develop long-term complications, including liver cancer. Progression to long-term complications is more commonly seen in those who are infected with Hepatitis B, C and D viruses. Individuals who are unable to clear these viruses remain mostly asymptomatic but are able to spread the infection.

Acute hepatitis often has no noticeable symptoms, so you may not realise you have it. If symptoms do develop, they can include

  • Flu-like symptoms
  • Fatigue
  • Dark urine
  • Pale stool
  • Abdominal pain
  • Loss of appetite
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Yellowing of the eyes and skin (jaundice)
  • Itchy skin
  • Muscle and joint pain

Mode of Transmission of Hepatitis

Hepatitis A and E
These viruses are spread through food or drinking water, carrying the virus through bits of faecal matter from an infected person.

Hepatitis B, C and D
These viruses are spread in several ways, including having sex with an infected person, shaPreventionring dirty needles, being in direct contact with infected blood, getting needle stick injuries and being transferred from mother to unborn child

There is a vaccine for protection against hepatitis A and B virus infection.

Certain lifestyle changes can help protect you from viral hepatitis, including: Factors

Avoiding sharing needles

Practicing safe sex

Practising needle safety

Avoiding sharing personal care items, such as toothbrushes or razors

Assuring the quality of drinking water

Frequently Asked Questions

If you are still unsure about this test, here are some questions that we usually get asked.

Still need answers?

What is the difference between Hepatitis A (HAV), Hepatitis B (HBV) and Hepatitis C (HCV)?

While HAV is transmitted through contaminated food and water, HBV and HCV are spread when blood, semen, or other body fluids from a person infected with the virus enters the body of someone who is not infected.

In addition, while HAV infection does not become chronic, some individuals, especially infants, do not completely clear the HBV and HCV, become chronic carriers, and may develop chronic complications.

How can you prevent viral hepatitis?

Safe, effective vaccines are available to prevent HAV and HBV. Currently, there is no vaccine available to prevent HCV.

Does hepatitis stay with you for life?

Some individuals are unable to clear the viruses that cause HBV and HCV completely. About 5% of infected adults and 90% of infants go on to develop chronic HBV.
