Menopause occurs 2-5 years earlier in African women compared to European and American women.
50M
Every year, there are 50 million new cases of menopause around the world.
Menopause is a natural part of a woman’s life when menstruation stops permanently.
It is an indication that the woman no longer has eggs in her ovaries. The onset of menopause is a gradual process, and the attainment of menopause is confirmed when there is no menstruation for at least 12 months. Hormonal changes occur in the period leading up to menopause and may cause physical and emotional symptoms.
In the period before menopause, you may experience the following symptoms
- Irregular periods
- Vaginal dryness
- Hot flashes
- Chills
- Night sweats
- Sleep problems
- Mood changes
- Weight gain and slowed metabolism
- Thinning hair and dry skin
- Loss of breast fullness
Stages of Menopause
Causes of Menopause:
In most women, the transition to menopause usually begins in their forties and is completed by the very early fifties. In some women, menopause may occur before they are 40 years old.
This may occur due to:
Surgical removal of the ovaries
The ovaries contain the eggs whose development drives the female menstrual cycle. If the ovaries are removed, menstruation will stop.
Chemotherapy and radiation therapy
A lot of cancer treatments destroy the eggs in the ovaries. If treatment results in the destruction of all the eggs in the ovary, menstruation will stop.
Primary ovarian insufficiency
A very small percentage of women become menopausal due to their genetic make-up or as a result of some diseases.
