Fertility refers to people’s ability to reproduce without medical assistance.
Male infertility is when a man is unable to make his female partner pregnant.
Male infertility can be caused by low sperm production, abnormal sperm function, or blockages that prevent the delivery of sperm. Illnesses, injuries, chronic health problems, lifestyle choices, and other factors may contribute to male infertility.
The main sign of male infertility is the inability to conceive a child. You may have male infertility if your female partner has not become pregnant after you have tried for one year. This means one year of regular sex without any birth control.
Causes of infertility include:
- Varicocele – A swelling of the veins that drain the testicle
- Infections – Interfere with sperm production/health
- Retrograde ejaculation – When semen enters the bladder during orgasm rather than come out of the tips of the penis
- Undescended testicles – Failure of the testes to descend from the abdomen into the scrotum during development
- Hormone imbalances – abnormality of the hormonal systems that support sperm cell development
- Blockage in the tubes that transport sperm
- Certain medications – There are certain medications that impair sperm cell development. These include testosterone replacement therapy, long-term anabolic steroid use, cancer medications (chemotherapy), and some ulcer drugs
- Environmental factors – exposure to X-rays, heavy chemicals like lead, or industrial chemicals like herbicides and pesticides
- Health and Lifestyle factors – Use of alcohol, tobacco, cocaine and cannabis (marijuana) well as obesity may also decrease male fertility.
See your doctor if you experience any of the following:
- Erection or ejaculation problems, low sex drive, or other problems with sexual function.
- Pain, discomfort, a lump or swelling in the testicle area.
- A history of testicle, prostate or sexual problems.
- A groin, testicle, penis or scrotum surgery.
- If your partner is over the age of 35.
Facts about fertility
- Sperm cells are constantly being produced, and it takes about two and a half months for completely new sperm cells to form. This can mean a common cold, fever, or flu bug can impact sperm quality/quantity and take up to 90 days to fully recover.
- Sperm cells are the smallest cells of the human body. Egg cells are the largest cells.
- The average ejaculate contains 200 million sperm.
- The speed of a swimming sperm is about 1-4 mm per minute.
- The optimal temperature for sperm production is 7 degrees cooler than the rest of the body. That is why the testes are inside the scrotum.
- Factors such as poor diet, smoking, and drinking can negatively impact sperm quantity and quality.
- Sitting in a hot tub, using a laptop directly on your lap, or even having your smartphone in your front pocket can negatively impact sperm quality.
Frequently Asked Questions
If you are still unsure about this test, here are some questions that we usually get asked.
Still need answers?
What is male infertility?
A couple is considered infertile if they have been unable to get pregnant after one year of frequent unprotected sexual intercourse. Male infertility is used to classify infertility when the female partner is known to be fertile.
Can regular exercise and a healthy diet increase my sperm count?
Regular exercise helps maintain weight and reduce emotional stress. Both stress and being overweight can negatively affect sperm quality and count. Thus, managing your weight and stress level with a healthy diet and exercise can have a positive effect on your sperm count. Obesity is known to impact the testosterone to estradiol ratio, which can negatively affect male fertility
What is erectile dysfunction/impotence?
Erectile dysfunction, also known as impotence or male sexual dysfunction, is an inability to get an erection that is good enough to achieve intercourse in a satisfactory way for both partners. The severity of erectile dysfunction can vary from a complete lack of erection to a partial erection that is not enough to penetrate your partner or is lost soon after you penetrate.

A simple, quick result test that tells you if you have antibodies in your blood against HIV.
The presence of these antibodies may indicate a previous infection with HIV.
These antibodies usually develop 2-8 weeks after infection. A single reactive result is not sufficient to confirm HIV infection.
Additional testing is necessary.
